Most of the content on this site is released under a Creative Commons Attribution, Non-commercial, No derivative works license (commonly known as BY-NC-ND). A few photographs and short stories are protected by copyright; these are clearly noted. Most photographs taken in July 2011 and earlier are protected by copyright as this was prior to this site’s switch to Creative Commons licensing. The general rule of thumb is, if there isn’t a copyright (©) symbol on the image or in the post, then the contents are released under the Creative Commons license above.
So what, exactly, does this mean?
The long and the short of it is, if you want to make use of one of the Creative Commons images on this site, you are free to, provided it is for a non-commercial, non-profit use. Such uses might include on a personal blog, or as a smartphone or computer wallpaper.
Should you make such a use, please credit me with a link back to this site. I’m also always interested to know where my photos end up, so dropping me a line to let me know you’ve used an image is forever appreciated.
However, you are not allowed to take any of these images and alter them in any way without my permission. This includes cropping the image to remove the watermark. If you want to do that, or use any photographs for a commercial purpose (that is, anything that is earning you money – this includes any revenue from on-site advertising, now matter how small), then you’ll need to drop me a line and tell me about it. Depending on who you are and what you’re intending to do, you may need to pay for the use of any photos.
If you want to make free use of one of the CC images on this blog but are looking for something at a higher resolution than the 1024×683 pixels most of my photos are uploaded at, or you want an image without the watermark, again, drop me a line and we should be able to arrange something.
Similarly, if you want to make use of an image protected by copyright, let me know, depending on the use there is probably an accord to be had.
